Matisse vs. Picasso

Join us for a talk which explores the dynamic and porous relationship between these two pioneering artists.

Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso... rivals? friends? The 50-year relationship between two of the most famous and influential artists of Modern Art, was definitely complex, wavering between rivalry or mockery at times, but was also based on a true artistic brotherhood.

They may have been "as different as the North and South Pole" according to Matisse, but each one recognised the other as his only true rival and a measure of his own success. When Matisse died, Picasso said "No one has ever looked at Matisse's painting more carefully than I; and no one has looked at mine more carefully than he". He also added: "In order to grasp 20th century art, you ought to see side by side everything Matisse and I were doing".

This video conference talk sheds light on the different approaches adopted by Matisse and Picasso, as well as the surprising intersections between their artistic practices.

The talk is structured around two sessions of 30 minutes each (with additional 15min for Q&As) and is delivered in both French and English.
